Day-by-Day Itinerary
Take an early morning flight from Addis Ababa to Semera. Upon arrival, meet your guide and travel by 4x4 vehicle toward Berhale, the gateway to the Danakil Depression. Stop for lunch in Berhale before continuing into the desert. Visit Lake Asale and observe traditional salt extraction by local Afar communities. Explore the spectacular geothermal landscapes and salt formations around Dallol, subject to local access and conditions. Continue to Hamed Ela for an open-air campsite and overnight stay.
Enjoy an early breakfast at Hamed Ela before driving toward the Erta Ale volcanic area. Continue by 4x4 to the trekking starting point and begin the hike toward the volcano. Erta Ale is currently dormant, so an active lava lake or glowing lava cannot be guaranteed. Enjoy the dramatic volcanic landscape, basalt formations and surrounding desert scenery. Overnight at a basic open-air campsite near the volcanic area, sleeping on mattresses under the stars.
After breakfast, begin the return journey toward Afdera. Stop to enjoy the dramatic salt and volcanic landscapes and visit the hot-spring area where conditions permit. Continue to the Afdera area and enjoy the unique desert scenery before having lunch. Drive back toward Semera and take the late-afternoon domestic flight to Addis Ababa, concluding your Danakil Depression adventure.
